Vegan Lancaster
We're putting together a list of what's available for vegans who want to eat out
in Lancaster. We really need your help in compiling this, so please let us know
what you find, and what's good on the form at the bottom...
General / Cafe's
- Whale Tail, 78a Penny St - the mainstay for veggies and vegans in
Lancaster. Generally good value for money and nice food. Lots of vegan
options, but they're not quite as interesting as what's on offer for
veggies. A little more fantasy in the cake department would be
apprectiated too ;-) Highly recommended nevertheless!
Indian Restaurants
Indian Restaurants are usually a good bet for vegans.
Things to watch out for:
- yoghurt or butter (-ghee) in the naans and chappatis (or other breads), and
cheese called panir.
- Moghuls, King St - really nice food, good prices.
Chappatis are vegan. Definately to be recommended
- Sultans, Brock St - a bit pricey, but worth it for a special occassion.
They'll do a vegan Thali for two if you explain about veganism.
Chinese Restaurants
Chippies
Things to watch out for: Chips are sometimes still fried in lard,
dripping etc - notably in most of Yorkshire and parts of Scotland. You can
usually smell it a mile off. Have a look in the chippy - you'll usually see cans
of fat standing around behind the counter and out the back.
Another problem is fish, sausages etc being fried in the same fat as the
chips - ask about this one too (although we haven't come across this for a
while - maybe something to do with Health and Safety?)
- Moorgate Chippy, Moorgate (up the hill from the Dukes) - our
favourite chippy - also because they wrap their chips in newspaper, and
not put it in horrible plastic trays.
- Golden Fry, King St - OK chips - wrap in paper rather than plastic
trays.
